Solar Power Shining Example

Posted on Feb 22, 2017 12:28:17 PM

Solar power is now on an unstoppable roll. This is the message not from politicians and pressure groups – whatever side of the climate change fence they stand — but from hard-headed businessmen, corporate and private investors, as well as increasingly the man on the street.

The reason is simple. Solar is cheap and becoming cheaper, and that makes the sector a highly attractive target for the moneymen who see an opportunity to turn a profit. The general public is also getting ever more enthusiastic about solar PV, as they see the financial sense it now makes to invest in the technology.  As OPEN previously reported many of the new innovations in solar, such as as a solar powered school,  a tuk tuk which crossed from India to London, solar water taxis, a solar aircraft which flew around the world and solar television have been hitting the headlines.

Pellworm: Europe’s Smartest Island

Posted on Dec 19, 2016 2:50:00 PM

Pellworm - dubbed Europe’s smartest island – stands as proof that an entire community can depend on wind and solar energy alone for its power needs after the first phase of a smart-grid research project was completed.

The Frisian island - situated near the German-Danish border – was selected by power company E.ON for a feasibility study into using battery storage systems to smooth out electricity supply and so cut the 1,200 strong community’s reliance on importing power via under-sea cables to meet peak demand.
