Denmark's Burping Cows in Fight Against Global Warming

Posted on Oct 19, 2016 12:21:00 PM

Researchers at a Danish university are developing a new strain of grass that is easier for cattle to digest, meaning animals grazing on it will burp and break wind less, and so help in the fight against climate change.

The problem with cows – and the same goes for all ruminants such as sheep, goats, camels and deer – is that due to their physiology what is expelled is methane, a powerful warming gas. Every kilo of methane has the same climate change effect as 23 kilos of CO2. Each cow emits a median of around 100 kilos of methane a year, which is equivalent to 2,300 kilos of CO2. Put another way, one cow's 'carbon footprint' is about the same as that of an average petrol car travelling 12,500kms a year.
