Fossil fuels are firmly out of fashion with investors, and fund managers are adapting to meet new ethical and sustainability objectives.

It has been estimated that burning as little as one-fifth of the known fossil fuel reserves could lead to the climate being pushed over the danger limit for global warming, leading to increasing demands for pension and investment funds to dump their shares in oil and coal companies.

Ireland to Divest Investments from Coal,Oil and Gas

Ireland is to become the first country to fully divest its public investments away from fossil fuels.The Irish Parliament voted 90 to 53 for new legislation that approves the sale of all its investments in the coal, oil and gas sectors.

The country has an €8 billion sovereign wealth fund called the Ireland Strategic Investment Fund, and it is hoped the money freed up will be switched to cleantech and sustainable energy instead.

Trillions of Dollars Shifting Away from Fossil Fuel Investments

Just one year after the Paris Climate Change Agreement recognised the need to switch the energy economy to a sustainable mode the value of fossil fuel divestment funds has doubled to US$5 trillion.

A new report by Arabella Advisors reveals that 688 institutions and more than 58,000 individuals in 76 countries have committed themselves to divesting funds away from fossil fuels. In a large number of cases the funds freed up are being diverted to 'green' initiatives to develop sustainable technology and invest in renewable energy.

Companies Acknowledging the Risks of Fossil Fuels Investments

OPEN welcomes the recent announcement from British Secretary for Energy and Climate Change Edward Davey where he stated that companies should disclose their investments in fossil fuels.

The BBC News has reported on the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)’s Synthesis Report, recently published in Copenhagen regarding the planet’s urgent need to phase out fossil fuels. With its bluntest wording yet, the UN-backed expert panel stated that the unrestricted use of fossil fuels without carbon capture should be “phased out” by 2100 in order to avoid “severe, pervasive and irreversible” damage.
