Red Bull's GRC Rallycross Championship Set to Go Green

The all-action thrills of motorsports don't have to be environmentally unsound – as set to be proven by Red Bull Global Rallycross, which is adding an all-electric class championship to its series, starting in 2018.

While F1 has run on hybrid technology for a while and the FIA already sanctions a street circuit electric vehicle (EV) 'E' race series, this latest initiative could be hugely important in developing every day cars that are clean.

When one thinks of Formula 1 (F1), the image conjured up is of fast, fuel guzzling racing cars and jet-setting, risk-taking playboys, like James Hunt or Lewis Hamilton, but what is often overlooked is the stated goal of Formula 1 to become a leader in developing new green technologies that increases greater fuel efficiency.

As early as 2007, Formula 1 sought to adopt a “green” image, and required that race teams to adopt greener technology — which many say will bring rapid innovation to the technology found in road cars. In fact, the UK government announced this year that over £38m of funding awards across the automotive sector will be designated to support emissions reduction projects, including an innovative initiative to harness Formula 1 technology.
