Biofuels and Life Cycle Analysis

Posted on Jul 14, 2015 2:39:00 PM

Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) is an important element of any form of renewable energy, and especially so with biofuels which so closely compete with fossil fuels in the transport sector.

Also known as cradle-to-grave analysis, LCA assesses the environmental impact of the product in question by holistically quantifying all inputs and outputs throughout the product's entire life cycle. LCA is mainly utilised to support business strategy, for research & development, and for educational purposes.

Third-Generation Biofuels: Algae

Posted on Jul 2, 2015 12:47:35 PM

Having looked at 1st-generation, 2nd-generation and 3rd-generation biofuels, we know that the most common types of biofuel production - like biodiesel and ethanol - generally fall within the first two generations of biofuels. First- and second-generation fuels come from food and non-food feedstocks alike, including corn, soybean, wood/forestry products, agricultural residue and waste, and many others.

There is another feedstock that is receiving a lot of attention now whose potential is so powerful as to bestow upon its production the title of "third-generation." This somewhat surprising feedstock of third-generation biofuels is: algae.

A Closer Look at Biodiesel

Posted on Jun 23, 2015 12:59:23 PM

In this fourth blog in the Biofuels series, we learn more about biodiesel. We've already introduced you to some of the biodiesel basics:

  • The first diesel engine built by Dr. Rudolph Diesel was designed to be powered with peanut oil
  • Biodiesel has been part of the automotive industry since its inception
  • The transesterification process of biodiesel (where vegetable oils are converted into fatty acid alkyl esters) dates back to 1937

A Short History of Biofuels

Posted on Jun 18, 2015 11:56:00 AM

In this Biofuels series, we've introduced the essential terms and have provided a basis for the inherent advantages of biofuels above fossil fuels. Here in this blog we'll look at a brief history of the biofuels sector to learn about the changes the sector has undergone since its inception.

The Early Days

The history of biofuels, as we know them today, began in the late 19th century with the advent of the automobile. Not many people know that the first cars ever built were designed to run on biofuels, not fossil fuels!
