Sour Milk Could Be a Sweet and Green Success

A pioneering company has become the first to create a process that turns waste milk, butter and cream into a commercially viable bio-diesel that may well help reduce the carbon footprint of dairy farming.

With livestock estimated to account for 18% of global carbon equivalent emissions it is a serious issue that has scientists looking for a solution. While some have focused on developing new strains of grass that are more easily digestible so cattle emit less methane, a two-year research project in Dubai has found a way of turning waste from the dairy industry into a useful product.

Producing Biofuel in Indonesia Without Chopping Down the Rain Forests

The production of biofuels in Indonesia has garnered a bad reputation over the past decade as rainforests have been cleared to make way for palm-oil plantations covering millions of hectares.

Combined with what was often a rapacious demand for timber from paper mills the country has seen its forest cover dwindle and heavy pollution poison of some of its rivers.
