The Enersel Engine Company Limited (EECL) has designed and is building an inspirational internal combustion engine, which is ‘omni-fuel’ capable. It has been conceived as an economic and environmentally viable alternative to natural gas, oil and diesel-powered generation.

When it comes to the transport sector, much of the world's focus is on the development of electric vehicles. This, however, does not mean the days of the internal combustion engine are numbered – indeed a vast market exists for clean technology solutions.

The EECL engine addresses Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and biomass waste conversion to energy applications within the off-grid and distributed energy sectors.

The standard EECL generator package is based on a 2-stroke opposed piston combustion engine configuration, and has been specifically designed to operate with low-grade gaseous and liquid fuels such as syngas, pyrolysis oil and gas, biomass, used cooking oils or plant oils as well as standard diesel and natural gas.

The EECL engine is not only compact, easy to transport and to operate, but it is also forecast to achieve electrical efficiency levels in excess of 30% when using 5MJ/Nm3 syngas.

The challenge for standard engines is the need for modification in order to deal with certain syngas components (such as tars, hydrogen levels and moisture), which can lead to an output reduction of 60-70%. EECL’s engine incorporates an innovative advanced ignition system which results in virtually complete combustion of all of the syngas composition, including contaminants, releasing a higher level of the fuel’s energy content and significantly reducing the harmful emissions content of the exhaust.
